Liudmila is een lokale partijbestuurder in Novotsjerkassk, een stad in het zuiden van de Sovjet-Unie. Ze is een trouw communist die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog vocht voor de ideologie van Stalin. Wanneer een arbeidersstaking in de plaatselijke fabriek dreigt, pleit Liudmila voor een hard optreden om het verzet de kop in te drukken. Maar de demonstratie is onvermijdelijk en ook haar opstandige dochter kiest de kant van de arbeiders. De bijeenkomst wordt door de autoriteiten hard neergeslagen. Liudmila is getuige van het bloedbad en de paniek en komt tot het gruwelijke besef dat haar dochter mogelijk is omgekomen. Haar wereldbeeld kantelt. Ondanks de blokkade van de stad, de massale arrestaties en de pogingen van de autoriteiten om het bloedbad te verdoezelen, gaat ze wanhopig op zoek naar haar dochter. Het verhaal van de aangrijpende Russische film Dear Comrades! van Andrei Konchalovsky is gesitueerd in de Sovjet-Unie in 1962, ten tijde van Chroesjtsjov, toen een arbeidersstaking bloedig werd neergeslagen. Een geschiedenis die jarenlang in de doofpot werd gestopt. De in prachtig zwart-wit beelden geschoten film werd op het Filmfestival van Venetië in september dit jaar bekroond met de speciale juryprijs en is verkozen als de Oscar-inzending voor Rusland.
